Memory in progress, the art project by Tadashi Kawamata in Saint-Thélo in Brittany created within the framework of the New Patrons programme of the Fondation de France, has taken on an un usual challenge: to create a space of interaction between the past and the present, between memory and the desire for a future.
Over three consecutive summers from 2004 to 2006 Tadashi Kawamata was joined by students of art and architecture of different nationalities to work on the refurbishment of three old weavers’ cottages, initially due for demolition, which bear witness to a defunct industrial activity, the production of linen canvas.

The edition bears witness to all three workshops. The DVD features a 60-minute documentary directed by Gilles Coudert and Damien Faure, which for three years follows the development and realization of the artist Tadashi Kawamata‘s project. The work Memory in progress received in 2008 the Special Brittany Architecture Prize out of category.

Texts by Tadashi Kawamata, de Anastassia Makridou-Bretonneau, approved mediator of the action New Patrons programme of the Fondation de France and by Daniel Le Goff, Mayor of Saint-Thélo.
