Le Trésor of the Angoulême Cathedral, begun in 2008 and completed in 2016, is a monumental creation by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, who redesigned spaces housing more than 200 objects and liturgical sculptures, largely dating back to the nineteenth century. This project was commissioned by the Drac (Regional cultural affairs directorate) in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, France.

This book tells the story of Le Trésor, a magnificent showcase for these cult objects that spans three rooms and 200 square meters.

A preface by Monsignor Dagens, Bishop Emeritus of Angoulême, and a comprehensive text by art historian Adrien Goetz emphasize the importance of this project, both to the history of cathedrals and within the universe of a contemporary artist whose work convokes the sacred.

The book also contains a film on DVD by Gilles Coudert and Damien Faure, which explores the voyage of Le Trésor’s creation through interviews with Jean-Michel Othoniel as well as visits to the workshops of numerous artisans who collaborated on the project and who shed light on the lengthy process involved in producing this major work of art.

The book and film presented here are like ex-votos, votive offerings that participate in the concept of this total, immersive artwork as a pilgrimage.
