“Memory at Work” is a research and creation workshop at the Avignon Art School directed by Gilles Coudert and coordinated by Véronique Mori. It is the subject of a partnership between a.p.r.e.s éditions and ESAA.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the field of contemporary art has continued to expand in perpetual movement, experimenting with improbable materials, using new technologies threatened with obsolescence, playing with the impermanent or purely conceptual character of the work, rejecting any limit. The questions of conservation and restoration have become crucial in the so complex problematic of the creation of our time.

The “Memory at Work” research workshop, directed by Gilles Coudert, is a collaborative project, focused on the active memory of works, through encounters with living artists. Carried out from 2010 to 2014, within the framework of the École Supérieure d’Art d’Avignon – which has the particularity of offering two educational paths: Creation-Instauration and Conservation-Restoration -, it made it possible to question from the process creative, the conditions for the preservation, restoration and transmission of a contemporary work of art.

This book brings together students’ meetings and interviews with guest artists – visual artists, filmmakers, architects and writers – during regular sessions.

Fabrice Hyber, Tadashi Kawamata, Anne and Patrick Poirier, Daniel Buren, Miguel Chevalier, Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Kimsooja thus came to discuss the “instructions for use” of their work and their position in relation to its future. this. The filmmakers Jean-Marc Chapoulie and François Ede, as well as the writer and critic Guy Lelong, have further broadened the field of investigation by approaching cinema and literature. Finally, the architects Hans-Walter Müller and Francesco Careri (Stalker) made students aware of practices linked to space and territory.

Through this set of interventions, the artistic, material and ethical complexity of practices related to the conservation, restoration and transmission of contemporary art emerges.
