Kimsooja, To Breathe – Mokum, Oude Kerk, Amsterdam

A film by Gilles Coudert

Year of production: 2025

Duration: 10 min.

English version with French subtitles

This film presents the exhibition “To Breathe – Mokum” at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam by Korean artist Kimsooja. Specifically designed for this 14th-century church, she created her largest series of bottari, iconic textile bundles inspired by traditional Korean wrapping cloth, filled with clothing from Amsterdam’s communities. She also covered the church’s imposing stained-glass windows with a transparent film that diffracts sunlight. This exhibition offers a meditative experience on exile and the objects we take with us or leave behind, in a dialogue between ancient heritage and contemporary art.

The artist Kimsooja shares her intentions with us alongside artistic director Mariette Dölle.
